  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, vegetable oil, buttermilk, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Fill each cupcake liner about 2/3 full with the batter.

  8. To make the cream cheese frosting, beat together the butter and cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and beat until well combined.
  10. Frost the cooled cupcakes with the cream cheese frosting using a piping bag or knife.
